Copperfield Damper Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Copperfield Damper Repair: The Huntington Owner’s Guide

Copperfield damper repair in Huntington typically runs $280-$520 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the plate, the frame, or the full assembly. We stock Copperfield-compatible parts on our trucks, and most swaps are completed in a single visit. You’ll usually notice the problem first as a draft you can’t shut off, or a handle that spins without catching.

We’ve replaced more dampers in Huntington’s Cold Spring Harbor and Southdown neighborhoods than we can count. The salt air off the Sound accelerates corrosion on the steel pivot pins, and the freeze-thaw cycles through Huntington’s winters warp cast-iron plates that were already thin from decades of heat cycling. Russell Haines has been reading these failures for over twenty years, and the pattern is consistent: Copperfield built a decent product, but nothing lasts forever in this climate.

Which Copperfield Models This Applies To

Copperfield dampers fall into three main series you’ll find in Huntington homes: the standard throat dampers (model prefixes SD and CD, common in 1980s-1990s construction), the top-sealing Lyemance line (L-Series, identifiable by the external cable and spring assembly), and the Lock-Top energy-saving dampers (LT-Series, with the silicone rubber gasket seal). The throat models are built into the smoke chamber; the top-sealing units mount at the flue tile crown.

Identification matters because the parts don’t interchange. A CD-36 plate won’t seat in an SD-36 frame; the pivot pin spacing differs by 3/16 inch. Lyemance cables are stainless steel but the springs are not, and that’s where they fail first. For OEM replacement, we source through Copperfield’s distribution channel. For older units where OEM is discontinued, we use aftermarket equivalents from Gelco and Olympia Chimney that match the critical dimensions and carry equivalent heat ratings. We measure on site before ordering anything. Hearthstone Chimney Co. is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Copperfield.

Signs Your Copperfield Damper Repair Is Failing

  • The handle turns but the plate doesn’t move. The linkage between the handle spindle and the plate has either corroded through or the set screw has backed out. In Huntington’s older homes near West Neck Road, we see this when the steel rod has rusted to the point it shears off entirely. The plate stays fixed in whatever position it failed in, usually open.
  • You feel a cold draft even with the damper “closed.” The cast-iron plate has warped from thermal cycling and no longer seats flat against the frame. A 1/8-inch gap is enough to pull conditioned air up the flue year-round. We document this with our camera inspection so you can see the daylight showing through.
  • The damper won’t open fully, or binds halfway. Creosote buildup on the plate edges, or a deformed frame from chimney fire heat exposure, creates mechanical interference. In Huntington’s tighter flues, particularly in pre-1970s construction, even minor warping causes binding because the clearance was never generous to begin with.
  • Water stains on the firebox floor below the damper. Top-sealing Lyemance and Lock-Top units rely on a gasket or seal that degrades. Once compromised, rain enters around the flue tile and follows the damper housing down. The rust stains on your firebox brick are the telltale sign.
  • The external cable is slack or the spring housing is cracked. Lyemance units depend on spring tension to seal against wind load. A cracked housing means the spring is corroded and has lost tension, or the pot-metal casting has failed from UV exposure on the chimney crown. Either way, the damper won’t seal under pressure.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s how pricing breaks down for Huntington:

  • Throat damper plate replacement only: $280-$360
  • Throat damper full assembly (plate + frame): $380-$480
  • Lyemance cable and spring kit: $320-$420
  • Lock-Top complete replacement with new gasket: $420-$520

The range reflects accessibility. A damper in a wide, straight smoke chamber takes half the time of one in a tight, offset flue where we’re working by feel and camera. Every repair includes removal and disposal of the failed component, installation of the replacement, operational testing, and a photo report of the completed work. Our 90-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation in writing, no arguing. The parts themselves carry manufacturer warranty. No-hassle upfront pricing means the estimate we give is the invoice you pay.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. You can verify the model number from any label on the damper frame or handle assembly, and you can confirm the symptom (does the handle move freely, does the plate respond). What you should not attempt is the actual removal and replacement. Throat dampers sit above the firebox in the smoke chamber, requiring work from the roof or from inside with specialized reach tools. The cast-iron components weigh 15-30 pounds and must be maneuvered without damaging the flue liner. Lyemance and Lock-Top units involve working at height on the chimney crown with tensioned spring assemblies. We’ve seen homeowners drop plates down the flue, crack flue tiles, and worse. A clean chimney isn’t a luxury - it’s just the job done right. Call (631) 776-4075 and we’ll sort it properly.
