Famco Crown Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Famco Crown Repair: The Huntington Owner’s Guide

Famco crown repair in Huntington typically runs $280-$520 installed, depending on crown size and whether the flue tiles need reseating. We stock Famco-compatible crown repair kits on every truck and can usually complete the job in one visit. Most Huntington homeowners notice the problem after a hard rain, when water starts finding its way past a cracked or spalling crown and into the firebox.

We’ve been repairing Famco crowns on homes from Cold Spring Harbor to Dix Hills for over twenty years. The crown takes the worst of Long Island’s weather - freeze-thaw cycles in March, summer humidity, and the occasional nor’easter driving rain sideways at the stack. When it fails, everything below it is at risk.

Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco manufactures several crown configurations, and matching the right repair kit matters. The most common we see in Huntington are the Famco standard poured concrete crowns (typically 24″ to 36″ square at the base, with a 2″ minimum overhang past the chimney brick), and the Famco preformed crown assemblies used on newer construction from the late 1990s forward.

To identify your model, check for a stamped metal tag on the chimney cap or a cast marking on the crown’s drip edge. If the tag’s gone (common after 15+ years), measure the crown’s width, depth, and the flue tile projection above it. The critical compatibility gotcha: Famco’s pre-2005 crowns used a 1.5″ flue tile setback, while post-2005 models went to 2″. Mix the repair kit and you’ll have a gap that traps water. We carry both specs.

OEM Famco crown repair kits are available but often carry a 2-3 week lead time. We use professional-grade aftermarket equivalents from Copperfield and Gelco that match Famco dimensions exactly, carry the same 10-year material warranty, and let us finish today instead of next month. Hearthstone Chimney Co. is an independent service provider - not affiliated with Famco - and we choose parts based on what works, not what box they come in.

Signs Your Famco Crown Repair Is Failing

  • Hairline cracks running from the flue tile to the crown edge. These start small after the first few freeze-thaw cycles, then widen every winter. In Huntington, we see this accelerate when crowns were poured without proper slope - water pools instead of shedding, and the crack network spreads like a web.
  • Spalling or flaking on the crown surface. The top layer of concrete pops off, exposing aggregate underneath. This means water has already saturated the crown body. Left alone, the steel reinforcement inside begins to rust and expand, cracking the crown from within.
  • Water in the firebox or rust stains on the damper. The crown’s job is to shed water away from the flue opening. When it can’t, water runs down the flue liner and pools at the smoke shelf. If you’re seeing this, the crown has been compromised for at least one season already.
  • Crown separation from the brick courses below. A visible gap or ledge where the crown meets the chimney body. This is structural - the crown is no longer bonded to the chimney, and wind-driven rain pushes straight through. We’ve found this on several West Neck Road homes where the original builder skimped on the bond coat.
  • Efflorescence (white powder) on the chimney brick below the crown. This is dissolved salts left behind as water migrates through the masonry. It means water is entering at the crown level and moving through the wall system. The crown is the entry point, but the damage spreads downward.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range
Famco crown repair kit (standard, up to 30″ square) $280-$380
Famco crown repair kit (oversized or multi-flue, 30″+) $380-$520
Flue tile reseating/repointing (if needed) $75-$150 additional
Level-2 camera inspection with photo report Included

What drives the range: crown size, number of flue tiles, and whether the existing crown needs full removal or can be resurfaced. We don’t guess - our technician photographs the crown, shows you the damage, and gives you the exact price before any work starts. No-hassle upfront pricing means the number on the estimate is the number on the invoice. Every Famco crown repair is covered by our 90-Day Done Right Promise: in writing, no arguing.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. A homeowner can check the crown from the ground with binoculars for obvious cracking, or look in the firebox after rain for water entry. What you can’t safely do is work at roof height on a chimney stack, handle the crown removal without destabilizing the flue tiles, or properly slope and cure a new crown pour. The fall risk is real, and a misaligned flue tile creates a carbon monoxide path into the house.

We carry Famco-compatible crown repair kits on every truck, and most jobs are completed in a single visit. If you’re seeing any of the symptoms above, call (631) 776-4075. We’ll give you a straight answer on whether it needs attention now or can wait until your next scheduled sweep.
